The difficult and challenging operating conditions posed by the oil and gas industry have constantly kept the equipment suppliers and production personnel on high alert. Unique and extreme conditions are present for the service of valves in the industry. Adding to this is the remote location of valve services, bringing to surface another set of peculiar obstructions. It is extremely important that valves are engineered properly for smooth and reliable operations. With the advancement of technology, performance expectations are higher than ever and myriad layers of operations need to be addressed.
Frequently Asked Questions: Valves
Valves find application in all the segments of the oil and gas industry- upstream, midstream and downstream. The main objective of a valve is to control the flow of the medium through a system. Valves are used to start, stop the flow, modulate and control the flow of the fluid, change the direction of the flow, regulate the pressure of the process and protect the piping system. Through effective use of valves, safety and efficient operation of the processes is ensured.
In the upstream segment, valves control the flow of crude oil and natural gas from high-pressure injection systems to choke valves and BOPs installed at the top of wells. In the midstream segment, long pipelines require compressors along the way to keep the product moving, and valves are asked to protect equipment while offering minimal restriction to the flow. When it comes to the downstream sector, the valve requirements include higher pressure designs and metal-seating technology and metallurgies to accommodate the temperatures at which modern refineries operate.
Multi-turn valves are also referred to as Linear Motion Valves. Under this category, the different types of valves are: Gate, Globe, Pinch, Diaphragm and the Needle valve. They are employed to accommodate a diverse range of flow medium. Their objective is to minimize turbulence, erosion and pressure drop.
The refinery segments employing valves are atmospheric distillation, vacuum distillation, hydro treating, catalytic reforming, fluidized catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydro cracking, delayed coking, sulfur recovery, visbreaking, gasification, cube treating and gas plants. For these applications, the ideal type of valves differs widely. However, generally they include multi-torn valves, HF alkylation valves, quarter-turn valves and flow reversal protection valves.
The Control Valves are particularly designed to ensure accurate proportioning control of flow. They automatically vary the rate of flow based on signals received from sensing devices in a continuous process.
The most commonly used valves across the oil and gas industry are: Gate, Globe, Check, Ball, Butterfly, Strainers, Control, Plug and Safety valve.
For the upstream sector, Gate Valves produced with higher alloy materials, are the most relevant and on some occasions, Ball Valves. Their usage is due to their strong resistance to corrosion. Isolation Valves play a crucial role in midstream applications to obstruct the flow during maintenance. As far as the downstream sector is concerned, the valve design solutions are diverse owing to various levels of harsh environment.
They are also known as Rotary Valves. They form the most versatile selection of valves with categories like Plug, Ball and Butterfly valve. The objective is to provide protection against erosion damage, solids that accumulate on the sealing surfaces and in cavities, and residual freeze up, which can prevent operation and cause leakage from packing wear.
The Check Valves, under the category of Self- Actuated Valves, are particularly designed to prevent backflows. When the fluid flows in the desired direction, it allows the valves to open up and the valves are closed during backflow.
Various critical factors need to be considered while selecting a valve such as, the substance to be handled and the required flow rate, the requirement that the valve controls in the manner demanded by the service conditions, capacity of the valve to withstand maximum working pressure and temperature, resistance to corrosion and erosion, actuator and maintenance requirements.
