Potassium Chloride is a high purity, dry crystalline inorganic/metal halide salt composed of potassium and chlorine, KCl. It has a molar mass of 74.551 g/mol and occurs naturally as the mineral slyvite. Potassium chloride is often referred to as muriate of potash (MOP), particularly when used as a fertilizer.
Applications Primarily used as a shale inhibitor as the potassium ion exchanges with calcium and sodium ions n the interlayer space in elites and steatites, converting them to more stable mica-type structures that do not hydrate and swell. Used to prepare brines for drill-in, completion, and workover fluids.
Advantages Widely used in the industry. Largely benign salt; solutions are neutral pH. Does not significantly impair performance of polymers such as viscosifiers and filtration controllers.

Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO3. It is a common substance found in rocks as the minerals calcite and aragonite (most notably as limestone, which is a type of sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcite) and is the main component of pearls and the shells of marine organisms, snails, and eggs. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime and is created when calcium ions in hard water react with carbonate ions to create limescale.
Applications:- The main use of calcium carbonate is in the construction industry, either as a building material, or limestone aggregate for road building, as an ingredient of cement. Calcium carbonate is also used in the purification of iron from iron ore in a blast furnace.
In the oil industry, calcium carbonate is added to drilling fluids as a formation-bridging and filtercake-sealing agent; it is also a weighting material which increases the density of drilling fluids to control the downhole pressure. Calcium carbonate is added to swimming pools, as a pH corrector for maintaining alkalinity and offsetting the acidic properties of the disinfectant agent.
Advantages CALCIUM CARBONATE is used to prevent fluid invasion of permeable zones, and to prevent loss of circulation during drilling, workover, and completion activities. … CALCIUM CARBONATE is also used as an acid soluble weighting material for drill-in or workover fluids with a density of 14.0 ppg or less.
Ground and sized Calcium carbonate is used to increase mud density and is preferable to barite because it is acid-soluble and can be dissolved with hydrochloric acid to clean up production zones. Its primary use today is as a bridging material in drill-in, completion and workover fluids. Sized Calcium Carbonate particles, along with polymers, control fluid loss in brines or drill-in, completion and workover fluids.

Sodium chloride has multiple functions in drilling and completion fluids. It is used to increase the fluid density, reduces the freezing point of water base drilling fluids, inhibits hydrate formation, provides shale control. … It is used as a base brine for completion and workover fluids.
Applications Sodium chloride has multiple functions in drilling and completion fluids. It is used to increase the fluid density, reduces the freezing point of water base drilling fluids, inhibits hydrate formation, provides shale control. … It is used as a base brine for completion and workover fluids.
Advantages A water-based solution of inorganic salts used as a well-control fluid during the completion and workover phases of well operations. Brines are solids free, containing no particles that might plug or damage a producing formation. In addition, the salts in brine can inhibit undesirable formation reactions such as clay swelling. Brines are typically formulated and prepared for specific conditions, with a range of salts available to achieve densities ranging from 8.4 to over 20 lbm/gal (ppg) [1.0 to 2.4 g/cmo]. Common salts used in the preparation of simple brine systems include sodium chloride, calcium chloride and potassium chloride.
