The VERTI-G cuttings dryer incorporates a high-speed vertical centrifuge that maximizes liquid-solid separation in large-volume processing. This mechanism makes the VERTI-G dryer one of the industry’s best performing and most dependable cutting dryers. Available in both standard and compact configurations, the VERTI-G dryer gives operators a critical advantage in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations for offshore cuttings disposal.
Drill cuttings are conveyed from the shakers to the VERTI-G cuttings dryer through a variety of site-engineered conveyance systems, including
Maintained by programmable logic control (PLC), the flow of cuttings into the VERTI-G dryer is continuously fed to optimize liquid-solids separation. Once cuttings are introduced into the dryer’s charge hopper, widely spaced, independently adjustable flights continuously direct cuttings to the screen surface. The flights are coated with tungsten carbide to reduce wear and ensure increased tolerance.
Flights within the VERTI-G dryer create a rolling action that promotes efficient separation and prevents screen plugging. Under high G forces created by the large cone diameter, liquid-solids separation occurs instantly as cuttings make contact with the finer-mesh, high-capacity centrifuge screen. The result is clean return fluid and dry solids discharge.
The VERTI-G cuttings dryer improves overall cost efficiency by recovering costly drilling fluid that is recovered from cuttings as well as whole mud lost from shaker failure and rig motion. Further, the VERTI-G cuttings dryer produces lower waste volumes by generating dryer solids in both oil- and synthetic-based drilling fluid systems. Reducing waste volume helps to significantly reduce disposal costs.
Routine flushing of the dryer system prevents solids buildup in the recovery area and minimizes shutdowns for cleaning. In addition, normal-wear parts are easily accessible from the top of the unit; belts are easily changed without removing the gear assembly. Interchangeable tungsten carbide rotor blades protect the rotor and gearbox from excessive erosion, minimizing main component failure and lowering maintenance cost.
The M-I SWACO 518 HV high-volume, high-speed decanting centrifuge is the premier high-speed, decanting centrifuge for drilling-mud and fluids-handling applications. Ruggedly built for oilfield and industrial service, the 518 HV centrifuge is especially effective for drying solids in environmentally sensitive areas. It delivers high fluid-recovery rates and efficient solids control to significantly reduce the costs of makeup fluids and disposal. In most instances, the 518 HV centrifuge can surpass the operational efficiency of two standard 518 centrifuges and provide increased fluid handling capacity as well as improved solids separation.
The 518 HV centrifuge has a high-capacity 14-in-diameter x 57 1/2-in-long [353-mm x 1,460-mm] stainless steel bowl and conveyor assembly. Further, the 518 HV centrifuge is engineered to handle high fluid processing rates by providing more power and improving the fluid flow in and out of the machine. The available power for the main drive (50 hp) and back drive (15 hp) enables more fluid to be fed into the bowl while providing the necessary torque to remove the increased solids load resulting from the higher feed rate. The 518 HV centrifuge is precision-balanced for smooth operation over long periods at speeds of 1,900 to 3,250 rpm, generating centrifugal forces up to 2,100 G.
The 518 HV centrifuge has an improved fluid accelerator to reduce turbulence and bring the fluid velocity (both magnitude and direction) up to the bowl rotating speed and direction as quickly as possible, thus reducing the energy consumed for fluid acceleration and reserving more energy for solids conveyance. The unit also contains a quasiaxial flow scroll that increases the flow area inside the bowl, thus reducing the fluid velocity and the onset of turbulence.

Operating at bowl speeds from 0 to 3400 RPM, with internal centrifugal acceleration exceeding 2300 G’s, the DE-1000™ Full Hydraulic Drive (FHD™) centrifuge can process 20 pounds per gallon of weighted mud, as well as flocculated ultra-fine solids slurries. A self-contained hydraulic system supplies pressure to the hydraulic motors that drive the bowl and the differential conveyor that operates at 3 to 90 RPM. Continuous monitoring of feed characteristics is used for automatic conveyor boost and protects the machine from overloads. The FHD centrifuge is designed for minimal maintenance and may be used in Class I, Division 1, Group C and D areas. Its stainless steel bowl and hardened conveyor tiles ensure long life and minimal maintenance.
