THE CHALLENGE
High shock and vibration, particularly in increasingly long laterals, can quickly drive up drilling costs. However, using aggressive bits to increase ROP and get quick performance gains can result in damages and associated trips for new bits and BHA components.
THE SOLUTION
The Mechanical Thruster reduces shock and vibration to increase reliability in BHA components and bits. It provides a consistent force to the bit by balancing hydraulics (back pressure below tool) and mechanics (weight on bit). This balance provides smooth energy transfer to the bit — even in erratic situations.
OUR PROCESS
As operators continue to push the limits in extreme conditions, Cougar’s Mechanical Thruster aims to reduce risks. We analyze BHA, well profile and drilling performance requirements and discuss specific objectives with your drilling team. This ensures you get optimal performance from the Mechanical Thruster.
THE CHALLENGE
When your drill string is stuck downhole, you need a high-impact drilling jar to apply force to the stuck point in the drill string. This frees the drill string and allows you to continue drilling ahead or pull out of the hole.
Oilfield drilling jars create a delayed hammer-anvil effect, either hydraulically or mechanically.
With a hydraulic drilling jar, once the latch is released, the tool goes into metering mode. It compresses fluid until the release pressure is accomplished. At that point the fluid is released and the hammer impacts the anvil, applying a fixed force to the string.
With a mechanical drilling jar, the use of heavy drill collars or heavy weight drill pipe is key to creating a strong impact force. This is accomplished by overcoming a fixed latch setting and releasing the string weight (hammer) to the tool (anvil), applying a fixed force to the drill string.
Either type of jar can work in downward jarring operations. However, only hydraulic or hydra-mechanic drilling jars can fire upward.
THE SOLUTION
Our oilfield drilling jars are among the toughest and most durable in the industry. With reliable, state-of-the-art design, they’re ideal for directional, horizontal and deep hole applications, on and offshore.
As part of the Cougar Drilling Solutions’ fleet of downhole drilling tools, the DJ6 fires up hydraulically and down mechanically. It employs a proprietary internal latch to prevent accidental firing downhole. It’s available in 3.50” to 9.50” OD.
THE CHALLENGE
A stuck point is one of the most expensive problems to occur downhole and is a significant risk in horizontal or high-angle drilling. When your drill string becomes stuck downhole, you need a high-impact drilling jar to apply force to the stuck point in the drill string. This frees the drill string and allows you to continue drilling or pull out of the hole as quickly as possible.
THE SOLUTION
Tough and durable, the Cougar DJ10 drilling jar is engineered for powerful performance. It can fire hydraulically in either direction and creates maximum impact.
For increased safety, the internal latch in the jar prevents misfire incidents and eliminates the need for bulky safety clamps.
The DJ10 is ideal in directional, horizontal and deep hole applications, and you can also tailor lock loads for optimized performance in specific drilling scenarios. It’s proven to get you out of the worst stuck point situations that can cause nonproductive time and raise costs.
The DJ10 uses the same dependable mechanical latch as the Cougar DJ6 but can jar down hydra-mechanically. It’s available in 4.75” to 9.50” OD, and you can tailor lock loads for optimized performance in specific drilling scenarios.
THE CHALLENGE
Bit bounce, shock, vibration and other erratic drilling conditions damage your bit and BHA and harm your overall drilling performance. This can lead to increased drilling times and associated costs.
THE SOLUTION
The Cougar ST5 drilling shock tool incorporates a configurable belleville spring stack with the highest grade oil sealed by available high temperature seals. It’s designed with carbide-coated components for the best performance in any fluid type, from high content brine to OBM.
Cougar configures each drilling shock tool for your rig and your conditions, with both tricone and PDC bits. Whether it’s a soft or stiff configuration, single or dual-acting stroke, we’ve got you covered with precise tools optimized for your application.
THE CHALLENGE
In challenging conditions, it can be difficult to reach total depth in a single run. Higher temperatures, deviation and poor hole conditions can hinder drilling performance. You need a motor with power and reliability to stay in the ground and meet your drilling objectives.
THE SOLUTION
With a combination of radial and thrust bearings, the Cougar drilling motor can handle the toughest conditions, from high-bit-bounce/high-vibration applications in hard rock to high-speed/high-temperature applications in softer formations.
Cougar has extensive experience providing drilling motors for applications around the world – from extended-reach, horizontal applications in North America to high-temperature, geothermal drilling applications in Turkey.
Cougar partners with the top power-section manufacturers in the industry to meet all runs-per-minute and flow requirements for any condition. We also offer the highest grade Kalsi rotational seals for maximum effectiveness in any application, whether vertical, directional or horizontal.
We use high-grade, heat-treated materials to construct each drilling motor, which we precision machine in Canada and ship globally.
THE CHALLENGE
Poorly manufactured stabilizers can be out of gauge or out of round, causing serious issues downhole. Your stabilizers need to be precision-machined to your specifications to ensure optimal tool performance.
THE SOLUTION
Cougar Drilling Solutions’ stabilizers reduce lateral vibration, limit unintended deviation and allow maximum steerability. They’re proven performers in even the most challenging wells and abrasive environments.
We design and precision-machine each drilling stabilizer in our Canadian facilities for quality assurance. We use 4330 and 4145 heat-treated, stress-relieved steel, tested by independent metallurgical laboratories to verify its quality.
Then, we mill and cut each stabilizer to meet your operation’s precise requirements and run each tool through a strict quality control process to ensure you receive the best product, every time.
SPIRAL BLADE DRILLING SERVICES
Spiral blade stabilizers are primarily used for low-deviation well profiles. Spiral blades provide maximum cuttings movement and keep your wellbore in gauge.
STRAIGHT BLADE DRILLING STABILIZER
Cougar track straight blade stabilizers are built for highly deviated and lateral well applications. They ensure maximum steerability and toolface control.
THE CHALLENGE
Well tortuosity and torque can create a less stable environment in vertical and directional drilling applications. Roller reamers are often needed to enlarge the borehole or smooth rough ledges that can increase wear and tear on equipment and increase risk of not reaching total depth.
THE SOLUTION
Cougar roller reamers are engineered for durability and reliability, even under the most severe reaming conditions. Offering many of the benefits of taper blade reamers, roller reamers also provide a rolling surface along the wellbore, which reduces torque, allows for greater energy transfer to the bit, and increases ROP.
OUR PROCESS
We design and build each roller reamer to your specifications from heat-treated, stress-relieved steel at our Canadian facilities. Each one must pass our thorough inspections and testing for quality assurance before shipment to your location.
THE CHALLENGE
A wellbore with high tortuosity and rough ledges can create efficiency challenges in vertical and directional drilling applications. Doglegs can increase friction in the drillstring, raising the probability of getting stuck downhole or failing to reach total depth.
THE SOLUTION
Count on Cougar taper blade reamers to reduce well tortuosity. This minimizes torque and drag during drilling, lowers risk of high wear and tear on equipment, and enables greater efficiency in your operations.
OUR PROCESS
We design and build each drilling reamer to your specifications so the tool will meet your requirements and objectives. We manufacture each one at our facilities in Canada and thoroughly inspect and test each drilling reamer for quality assurance.
THE CHALLENGE
When drilling deviated wells, geosteered wells or wells that require directional corrections, you increase well tortuosity and create doglegs and ledges across your wellbore. These ledges can cause an accumulation of torque and drag when you drill and run casing. In extreme cases, you may not be able to get casing to total depth.
THE SOLUTION
Count on Cougar tools to reduce well tortuosity and smooth ledges and doglegs. This minimizes torque and drag during drilling and allows for more efficient casing running operations.
We design and build each drilling reamer to your specifications so you can rest assured that the tool will meet your objectives and well requirements. We manufacture each one from heat-treated, stress-relieved steel at our facilities in Canada and thoroughly inspect and test each one for quality assurance.
OUR PROCESS
These tools are your first line of defense against undergauge holes and poor wellbore quality. They help you create a smooth wellbore, allowing you to drill efficiently and run casing to bottom without setbacks.
Your Bit’s Watch Dog
The Cougar Drilling Solutions Bit Bull provides a surface indication (torques up) as the bit goes under gauge and prevents excessive wear on the bit body to extend bit life and enhance performance.
The Cougar Bit Bull maintains smooth hole conditions to improve sliding and reduce drag, while a large flow area between the blade ensures good hole cleaning. This helps to maximize penetration rates.
At Cougar, our Bit Bull offers the same hardfacing options available on our stabilizers and taper blade reamers. It is available in carbide buttons, plaquettes, and hardfacing.
Stay on Target, Stay in Zone and Maximize Recovery
On time and in zone – the goals of directional drilling – sound easy enough? There are a lot of pieces that must be in place to ensure these goals are met and executed. From the right well plans to the proper motor configuration and experienced field personnel, there are many moving parts in any directional drilling operation.
At Cougar, we believe all of the pieces can fit together to maximize effectiveness and increase efficiency.
Collaboration
Starting from the operator’s request, we will collaborate with your team to fully understand the requirements of your upcoming drilling campaign, create a plan of action, come back to our teams with that information and design a fit-for-purpose directional plan to meet the needs discussed.
Well Planning
Next we will design a well plan based on your requirements and begin to design well specific BHAs for maximum effectiveness and time savings. This could include:
1. Drilling Motors
Having the right motor configuration, bend and stabilization can mean the difference to landing on plan or tripping out of hole for a secondary assembly. We utilize built-in-house motors and top-tier power sections to ensure we stay in hole and meet plan, every time.
2. MWD
Without a robust, accurate MWD system, there is no way of knowing where in the ground your bit is drilling. Cutting corners is not an option. We hold our MWD facilities to the highest standards to ensure the surveys are pumped up on time, every time.
3. Stabilization
When designing an assembly for build, build and hold, hold or vertical control, stabilization is the key to performance. We will study these requirements and utilize our in-house machining capabilities to make sure the stabilizers are cut to the accurate OD, gauge and taper for maximum effectiveness, every time.
Other Tools and Services
RSS – Rotary steerable systems are available for use by Cougar in parts of the MENA region. These tools will allow the operator to continue rotating thru build sections instead of putting in timely slides. This will allow you to drill faster, reduce DLS and create a smooth wellbore for your casing, completions and production teams to have the best shot at success.
LWD – Logging while drilling is the use of gamma ray, resistivity, porosity, density and nuclear source to provide an accurate image of the available resource to be recovered. This provides insight and understanding to the operator as to where this well should be placed (geosteering) what potential recovery should be, and where the following offset well campaigns should be placed.

Experts in the Field
With decades of experience in some of the harshest geothermal applications around the globe, we have the knowledge and capabilities to reduce time and costs on your geothermal drilling campaign.
The steam and high temperature of geothermal wells can create risks. For example, steam kick can kill an inferior tool string, causing a trip out of hole and potentially a stuck point situation if the failure is severe. Not only do downhole failures cost money but tripping out of hole on high-pressure, high-temperature geothermal wells exposes your entire crew to unnecessary risk.
We believe in providing the most effective and efficient technologies to your operation to reduce the noted risks and costs while drilling a high quality wellbore for maximum production.

Stabilization
Shock and vibration—it’s a topic that’s often discussed and always in the back of our minds. As an industry, we spend a lot of money looking into the data on shock and vibration, but rarely take the adequate action to either mitigate it or make it work for us.
At Cougar, we live and breathe shock and vibration.
We work with you to take an in-depth look at your drilling program, run proper analyses and make recommendations on how to reduce or excite shock and vibration.
